Hotels in Karaköy and Galata: Istanbul’s Waterfront Design District

Twenty years ago Karaköy was a district of shipping offices, hardware shops and warehouses. Today its old bank buildings and han courtyards house design hotels, galleries and some of the city’s best coffee. It sits right on the water at the foot of the Galata Tower, between the old city across the bridge and the restaurants of Beyoğlu up the hill, which makes it one of the most convenient places to stay in Istanbul.

What makes Karaköy a good base

  • Location: walk across the Galata Bridge to Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar in about 15 minutes, or take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet.
  • Ferries: boats to Kadıköy and Üsküdar leave from the Karaköy pier.
  • Galataport: the redeveloped waterfront with a promenade, shops and the Istanbul Modern art museum.
  • Food: from fish restaurants and baklava shops to brunch cafés and wine bars.

Karaköy vs Galata

Karaköy is the flat waterfront strip; Galata climbs the hill towards the tower and Tünel. Hotels in Galata (around Bereketzade, Arap Cami and Şahkulu) are in older buildings on steep, narrow streets; those in Karaköy (around Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa and Kılıçali Paşa) are closer to transport and the water. The historic Kamondo Steps and Bankalar Caddesi link the two.

Things to consider

  • Hills: walking up to Galata or İstiklal is steep. The historic Tünel funicular helps.
  • Noise: some streets have bars open late; the waterfront can be busy when cruise ships are in port.
  • Prices: design and boutique hotels here are often more expensive than in Sultanahmet.

  3. Afternoon: ferry from Karaköy to Kadıköy and back for the view.
  4. Evening: sunset at Galata, dinner in Karaköy or Asmalımescit.
