Bathing culture is woven into Istanbul’s history, and many hotels now pair a room with a hammam, steam room, pool and massage menu. A spa hotel can be a treat in winter, a refuge after a long day of sightseeing, or a comfortable base during recovery from a treatment. This guide explains what to expect and how to choose.
Hotel hammam vs historic hammam
A hotel hammam is usually a smaller, modern marble room inside the spa, often bookable privately, with a therapist who performs the traditional scrub (kese) and foam wash. A historic hammam, such as the Ottoman-era baths in the old city, is a larger public building with separate sections or times for men and women. Both are worth trying; the hotel version is more private and convenient, the historic one more atmospheric.
What a typical hotel spa offers
- Hammam with kese scrub and foam massage
- Sauna and steam room
- Indoor pool (outdoor pools are less common in the city centre)
- Massage and facial treatments
- Fitness centre
Access to the pool and sauna is often included for hotel guests, while treatments are extra. Check opening hours and whether children are allowed in the spa area.

Spa hotels during medical recovery
If you are in Istanbul for a hair transplant, dental work or cosmetic surgery, a comfortable hotel helps recovery. But be careful with the spa itself:
- Saunas, steam rooms, hammams and pools are usually off limits for several weeks after hair transplants and surgery because of heat, humidity and infection risk.
- Massages on or near a treated area should be avoided until your doctor allows it.
- A quiet room close to the clinic and good room service are often more useful than spa facilities in the first days.
Read our hair transplant recovery timeline for typical restrictions.
Thermal spas outside Istanbul
For real thermal springs, you need to leave the city: Yalova, Bursa and Afyon are known for mineral-rich thermal waters and spa resorts. See thermal spa hotels in Turkey.
Frequently asked questions
What do I wear in a hammam?
A peştamal (cotton wrap) is provided. Swimwear is common in hotel hammams; ask about the local custom.

Heat exposure is usually not recommended. Ask your doctor and tell the spa.
Do I need to book spa treatments in advance?
For weekends and evenings, yes. Ask reception on arrival or book when you reserve your room.
