Clear Aligners in Istanbul: Can You Do Orthodontics as a Medical Tourist?

Clear aligners are removable, nearly invisible plastic trays that move teeth gradually into a better position. They are a popular alternative to fixed braces and can be a more conservative way to improve a smile than veneers. Unlike veneers, though, aligner treatment takes months, which raises a practical question for visitors: how does it work if you only spend a few days in Istanbul?

How aligners work

  1. A 3D scan of your teeth is taken.
  2. An orthodontist plans the movement digitally and shows you a simulation of the final result.
  3. A series of aligners is produced, each worn for about one to two weeks, 20–22 hours a day.
  4. Small tooth-coloured attachments are often bonded to some teeth to help movement.
  5. Progress is checked, and refinement aligners are made if needed.

Who it suits

  • Mild to moderate crowding or spacing
  • Some bite problems, depending on complexity
  • Relapse after previous braces
  • Preparing teeth before veneers or crowns, to reduce the need for tooth reduction

Complex cases may still be better treated with fixed braces.

Treatment as a medical tourist

Many Istanbul clinics offer a model where the scan, planning and attachment bonding are done in one visit, aligners are sent or handed over in batches, and progress is monitored remotely by photos or an app, with a follow-up visit if needed. This can work for straightforward cases, but ask:

  • Who is the orthodontist responsible for my case?
  • How will progress be monitored, and how often?
  • What happens if teeth don’t track and I need adjustments?
  • Can a local dentist or orthodontist support me at home?

Typical costs in Istanbul

Depending on brand and case complexity, aligner treatment is often quoted at about €1,500–€4,000, sometimes less for minor cases. Prices in the UK and US are typically considerably higher. Retainers after treatment may be extra.

Timeline

Minor cases can take 3–6 months; more complex ones 12–18 months or more. Wearing aligners for the recommended hours is the biggest factor in success.

After treatment

Teeth tend to move back without retention. Wearing retainers, usually at night, is essential long-term.

Frequently asked questions

Aligners or veneers?

Aligners move your natural teeth without removing enamel; veneers change their appearance. Sometimes a short aligner treatment before veneers gives a better, more conservative result. See veneers in Turkey.

Do aligners hurt?

Mild pressure for a day or two with each new aligner is normal.

Can I eat with aligners?

You remove them to eat and drink anything except water, then brush before putting them back.
