The Datça peninsula stretches like a finger between the Aegean and the Mediterranean, west of Marmaris. It is famous for clean air, quiet bays, almond trees, thyme honey and an unhurried pace that has drawn writers and artists for decades. There are no big resorts; accommodation is mostly small hotels, stone guesthouses and holiday homes.
Where to stay
Eski Datça (Old Datça)
A hillside village of restored stone houses with bougainvillea and cobbled lanes, a few kilometres inland from the town. Several small boutique hotels and guesthouses are here. Peaceful, atmospheric and a short drive to the sea.
Datça town
The main town has a harbour, restaurants, small beaches (Kumluk and Taşlık) and the most choice of hotels. Practical if you don’t want to drive every day.
Palamutbükü and the bays
Further west, Palamutbükü has a long pebble beach and fish restaurants, while bays such as Ovabükü and Mesudiye are quieter still. Good for slow, sea-focused stays.
Things to do
- Visit the ruins of ancient Knidos at the tip of the peninsula, by road or by boat.
- Swim in clear bays such as Kızılbük, Hayıt and Palamutbükü.
- Buy almonds, thyme honey and olive oil from local producers.
- Take a boat trip along the coast from Datça harbour.
Seasons
June and September are ideal. The almond trees blossom in late winter (around February). July and August are warm but less crowded than Bodrum or Marmaris.
Getting there
- From Dalaman Airport (DLM) about 2.5–3 hours by car via Marmaris; the road is winding.
- From Bodrum, a car ferry crosses to Körmen near Datça in summer (about 1.5–2 hours).
- A car is very useful for reaching the bays.
