Zirconia Crowns in Istanbul: When You Need Them, Cost and What to Ask
Zirconia crowns are among the most common dental treatments sold to visitors in Istanbul. Zirconia is a very strong ceramic that can be made to look natural, and it is excellent for teeth that genuinely need full coverage. The key word is “need”: crowns require substantial reshaping of the tooth, so they should be chosen for the right reasons.
When a crown is the right choice
- Teeth with large fillings or significant decay
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Teeth after root canal treatment, especially back teeth
- On top of dental implants
- As part of a bridge replacing a missing tooth
For healthy teeth with cosmetic issues only, veneers, bonding, whitening or orthodontics are usually more conservative. See veneers in Turkey.
Types of zirconia
- Monolithic (full-contour) zirconia: made from a single block; extremely strong, good for back teeth and grinders; slightly less translucent.
- Layered zirconia: a zirconia core with porcelain layered on top for more natural translucency; very aesthetic, but the porcelain layer can chip.
- Multilayer/translucent zirconia: newer materials that combine strength with improved appearance.
Costs in Istanbul
Zirconia crowns are commonly priced at about €150–€350 per tooth, depending on the clinic, material and lab. A set of 20 crowns may be quoted as a package. Compare per-tooth prices and ask what is included (temporary crowns, X-rays, root canal if needed).
The process
- Examination and X-rays; any decay or root problems treated first.
- Tooth preparation (reshaping on all sides) and digital scan or impressions.
- Temporary crowns while the lab makes the final ones (usually 3–5 days).
- Try-in, adjustments and cementation.
Expect to stay about 5–7 days for multiple crowns.
Risks
- Sensitivity after preparation, usually temporary
- Need for root canal treatment later in some heavily reduced teeth
- Gum irritation if margins are poorly fitted
- Wear on opposing natural teeth if zirconia is not polished properly
Questions to ask
- Why does each tooth need a crown rather than a veneer or filling?
- Which type of zirconia and which lab?
- Will you take X-rays after preparation?
- What is the guarantee?
